the country are hampered by isolation, low-density population, and lack of institutional

Rural Development/CooperationWorks! Fund
The Rural Development Fund was created within the Cooperative Development Foundation
to support projects that answer the needs of rural people. From 1990 to spring
1999 the Fund leveraged $350,000 in contributions into a total of $1.4 million
in federal funds for rural development. The Fund also supports a network of 10
Regional Centers for Cooperative Development CooperationWorks!.
These Centers have initiated more than 100 projects in the agriculture, forestry,

Sample Projects and accomplishments:
- Rural Health Care -- Created a cooperative that serves the needs of rural
emergency medical services providers in 11 counties in California.
- Small Manufacturers -- Created expanded sales and workforce training and assisted
in technology transfer for 1,300 small manufacturers networked together in the
Mississippi Delta.
- Recycling -- Twenty-eight rural counties participated in a feasibility study
to develop a multi-county co-op to jointly market their recyclables.
- Education -- Eight rural school districts joined together to access the Internet
and bring technology to their students.
- Child Care/Education -- Helped a Hispanic community create a child care co-op
and education center for after school programs and evening adult education classes.
- Financial Services -- Created 3 credit unions in low-income areas in the south
and provided training for a number of existing credit unions.
